Gear problems — shoes

I just completed a multi-year thru hike (MYTH) of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). It took three years. I hiked 1840 miles in 2021, 733 miles in 2022, and 122 miles in 2023. The only reason I had to hike in 2023 was a wildfire closure at the north end of the PCT in 2022. During the past two years, I've also thru hiked other, shorter US trails. I hiked the Benton MacKaye Trail (GA, NC, TN) and the Tuscarora Trail (VA, WV, MD, PA) in 2022 plus the Ozark Highlands Trail (AR) in 2023. I hope to hike the Long Trail (VT) next year and the Colorado Trail at some point in the future. Please note, all content on this site is copyright.

  1. I feel ya! Historically every pair or great fitting hiking shoes I’ve owned felt drastically different when I tried to replace them a few years later (i’m looking at you Keen footware). My latest appreciation is for OBOZ footware, their sawtooth series feel great for my wide feet. If you need to venture outside your comfort zone try those.

Also, I usually have a few zip ties on trail with me because we’ve backpacks break before. Good news is Osprey will replace that if you get in contact with them. If you mention you’re on the PCT they might be able to get you one from a local dealer without issue.

    Good luck.

  2. I just chatted with someone from Osprey. They said the damage is covered and you should call them for fastest response.

    Good luck

  3. Have you tried Altras? All kinds of room for the toes. I use the Lone Peaks. Also, you probably know this, but if your poles are just the tips, you can stick them in boiling water and it will liquify the glue to get them off to replace the tips for about $20. Happy trails!

    1. My shoe problems began with Altras. I realize I may be a minority of one, but I hated them. Zero lateral support. Also, the pair I bought were poorly made. The toe bumpers started coming off on the 1st day and the left tongue had been sewn in crooked. As for the sticks. I broke one one whacking at a bush in anger. The bush won. Serves me right.
